"Democracy demands that the religiously motivated translate their concerns into universal, rather than religion-specific, values. It requires that their proposals be subject to argument, and amenable to reason. I may be opposed to abortion for religious reasons, but if I seek to pass a law banning the practice, I cannot simply point to the teachings of my church or evoke God’s will. I have to explain why abortion violates some principle that is accessible to people of all faiths, including those with no faith at all. Now this is going to be difficult for some who believe in the inerrancy of the Bible, as many evangelicals do. But in a pluralistic democracy, we have no choice. Politics depends on our ability to persuade each other of common aims based on a common reality. It involves the compromise, the art of what’s possible. At some fundamental level, religion does not allow for compromise. It’s the art of the impossible. If God has spoken, then followers are expected to live up to God’s edicts, regardless of the consequences. To base one’s life on such uncompromising commitments may be sublime, but to base our policy making on such commitments would be a dangerous thing."

AGH! I HATE when people lay the claim that the US is a Christian nation and was founded based on those values.  While there were founders who aligned themselves with various churches, many of the founders were deists or did not associate themselves with organized religion, this included Thomas Jefferson, who wrote much of the Declaration of Independence.

The declaration states ” that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Creator does not equal the Christian god, period. Particularly when you consider that Jefferson wrote it. It is also funny to me that the creator part is seen so prominently and used as ammunition for the religious right, but they ignore the equality and pursuit of happiness statements by denying gay marriage.

As far as the first ten amendments to the constitution, I would love to know how they were inspired by the ten commandments:

First Ten Amendments:

  • Amendment 1 - Freedom of Religion, Press, Expression
  • Amendment 2 - Right to Bear Arms
  • Amendment 3 - Quartering of Soldiers
  • Amendment 4 - Search and Seizure
  • Amendment 5 - Trial and Punishment, Compensation for Takings
  • Amendment 6 - Right to Speedy Trial, Confrontation of Witnesses
  • Amendment 7 - Trial by Jury in Civil Cases
  • Amendment 8 - Cruel and Unusual Punishment
  • Amendment 9 - Construction of Constitution
  • Amendment 10 - Powers of the States and People
  • And The Ten Commandments:

    1. Have no other gods.
    2. Have no idols.
    3. Honor God’s name.
    4. Honor the Sabbath day.
    5. Honor your parents.
    6. Do not murder.
    7. Do not commit adultery.
    8. Do not steal.
    9. Do not perjure yourself.
    10. Do not covet.

Further proof Sarah Palin is religious idiot.  And apparently cannot read as the constitution fails to mirror the commandments…. Also, I love how Bill O’Reilly attempted to use the fact that there are courthouses with the ten commandments displayed, as that is pretty blatantly unconstitutional given the first amendment.
